Having proven to myself that I can actually do something that other people like (or at least pretended to!) I have continued drawing.
Mostly I draw things that I fancy drawing and I'm under no illusion that my art will suddenly become representative of tangible things. I draw what I enjoy or what has a message to me.
Nautical charts use this star to indicate the position of true north. It is positioned on the outermost of two compass circles.
To me, it is a gentle hark back to my roots - I am a northern lad at heart despite my 20 years living in the Cotswolds...
A relatively simple, yet eye-catching design which keeps pointing me 'home'!
Invented way back in 1974, same as me, this famous cubic puzzle has irritated and captured people in equal numbers.
I was never able to figure it out - this is long before the millions of uploaded YouTube tutorials (largely defeating the point in my view!) so the only way I have ever completed the puzzle was to gently peel off the stickers and reposition them!
Most of my work so far has been monochrome, perhaps reflecting my views of the world, perhaps a little bit of 'fear' at not understanding shading, colour wheels or which go together with which.
However, I am reading lots about the use of colours linked to the moods and emotions of people. From this initial reading, where did I default? Shades of grey!
I am collating information and 'playing' with colour in some sketches / swatches etc before perhaps creating a series of works depicting human states.
This piece represents the intermingling of people. People often have differing views on topics and in some cases we avoid certain conversations with even our closest friends as we know we are at opposite ends of a topic.
We often see our view of a topic as being black and white - I am right, you are wrong (or vice versa!) and at certain times in our lives I think these views become an even more clear cut opinion.
Each of the circular 'beings' have a very black and white view of the world, but when we overlap with other people we all have to concede that there are 'grey areas' in everything.
Well, I was bored and.....
Not quite. On a recent holiday I found myself in an awesome gallery in Barcelona and found a selection of skateboard decks on display. You could literally hear the lightbulb warming up above my head. The idea was planted...
When I got back I found a 'previously loved' board and set about sanding it, priming it and then painting it. It was quite a departure for me as I normally work in pen widths below 0.8mm but this paint pen was 5mm. It needed to be this large to create the visual impact I was aiming for.
Upon its completion I built it up with new trucks and wheels and propped it up artistically next to my bookshelf. Then I decided that I wasn't going to venture on to it as a moving device, so it is now wall-mounted.
I love the impact it has and how it grabs your attention! There may be a page coming to this website very soon launching a limited run of individually painted boards! Keep an eye out for that 'rad' launch!
This new set of images has come from the depths of my slightly impacted mental state. Please take a look at the specific page for further details!
